Justice and Peace

A commitment to justice and peace is a part of Dominican history and of our current mission. St Catherine of Siena worked among the poor and the sick of Siena, including plague victims, and brokered peace between the warring cities of Italy. St Martin de Porres tended the sick, even in times of epidemics, and in normal times fed up to one hundred and sixty poor people every day. Bartolomeo de Las Casas spent 50 years of his life actively fighting slavery and the colonial abuse of Indigenous peoples, especially by trying to convince the Spanish court to adopt a more humane policy of colonization. Nowadays Dominicans serve in a variety of apostolates, but chiefly in education and social care, recognising the human dignity of every person from conception to natural death.
